Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
