The artist contributes his £25k prize cash award to small live spaces

Sam Fender received the Mercury Prize in October in his hometown

The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 honor winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was given the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was declared the top album of the previous year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots had in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, generating over £100k on his recent tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation assisted venues that were confronting possible closure due to issues stemming from floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The concept that funds from shows in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their release their work, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would donate their winnings to the organization War Child.

During 2002, artist she shared her prize between several good causes, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed better apparatus," Ms Dynamite told a publication.

In recent years, the band gave their prize money to the youth organization that developed their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

Additionally 1994 winners the group gave their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked singer Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our success touched another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had saved several grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by a national body and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
