Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss medications is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Online

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Operations

Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at home.

After minutes of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
