Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
