European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
