British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
